Knowing Christ

The Gospel.  Matthew 9:35 says it was the message of Jesus – He went everywhere preaching it.   When He returned to heaven, Jesus told His church in Mark 16:15 that the Gospel was to be its message also.  So just what is this Gospel?  Mark 1:1 says that the Gospel is the good news of Jesus.  It is this good news, the Gospel, that Lifeway Baptist Church would like to share with you.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 says this, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”  The Gospel is simply the good news that Jesus died on the cross for the sins of all men and rose again the third day.

Believing the Gospel and putting one’s faith in Jesus is what makes a person a Christian and gives them a home in Heaven when they die.  This is what God wants for every person.  It’s why Jesus died on the cross.  But before the Gospel can be believed it needs to be understood.  The Gospel can be easily understood by taking each letter of the word Gospel and giving it a Bible truth.

G – God says that everyone has sinned.  Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”  Every person, you and I included, are sinners.

O – Our sins separate us from God.  Isaiah 59:2 says, “But your iniquities [sins] have separated between you and your God.”  Because we are all sinners, we must face God’s judgment.  Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death;”  Sin brings with it a penalty, death in hell and separation from God.

S – Sins cannot be paid for by good deeds.  Galatians 2:16 says, “…by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”  No amount of good works on our part can take away even one sin.  Ephesians 2:9 says, “Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

P – Paying the price for our sin, Jesus died and rose again.  Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth [proved] his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  We couldn’t save ourselves, so Jesus died in our place.

E – Everyone who believes the Gospel will be saved.  Romans 10:9&13 says, “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Faith in Jesus and asking Him to save you grants everlasting life.

L – Life that is eternal can never be lost.   John 10:27-29 says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.  My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”  Over and over in the New Testament, God promises eternal life and everlasting life to those who trust Him for salvation.     1 John 5:13 says, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

God wants you to be saved.  He wants you to go to Heaven, but He has never forced salvation on a single person.  You must believe the Gospel – what the Bible says about how to be saved and you too can have eternal life!  Asking Jesus to save you is as simple as praying in faith something like this:

God, I know I’m a sinner and I deserve to go to hell.  But I believe that you love me and sent Jesus to die for my sins.  Right now, the best I know how, I place my faith and trust in you to save me and take me to Heaven when I die.  In Jesus name, Amen.

If you just prayed that prayer and by faith accepted Jesus as your Savior, we’d love to hear about it!  Call Pastor Zimmerman at 520-579-8477 or e-mail him at
